10 Must have beauty favourites for summer, December 2015

December in South Africa. A summer Christmas. Whilst following several beauty bloggers and floggers, their fashion favourites consist out of trench coats, beanies and Christmas jumpers and their beauty favourites out of plum lipsticks and shimmer eyeshadows. Not for me. Christmas time in South Africa means bikini’s, sunscreen and swimming and you will not be caught dead with a shimmer eyeshadow. Nudes, a natural coral lip colour maybe, and lots of sunscreen and setting spray to get you through the day.

Here are my must have beauty favourites for summer:

1. The Body Shop Tea Tree Flawless BB Cream

IMG_6085.JPG

This product is amazing. I needed a something to mix with my foundation to make it more dewy and to be able to match the colour according to my tan. This Tea Tree BB Cream is a winner. I would mix a certain amount of BB Cream with my foundation on a beauty blender and it applies flawlessly. I took the shade light (I def don’t have fair skin) but it will be perfect all year round. It goes on like silk on my skin and I def saw an improvement in the quality of foundation. I have evens out the lines on my forehead and makes the foundation last a tad bit longer.

With being on the beach each day tanning then heading off to a cafe or restaurant after, I didn’t want to apply a full face of make-up. I would quickly apply some BB cream with a small hint of foundation just to even out my skin, with a little mascara and lipbalm and I was good to go.

You can get it here: http://www.thebodyshop.co.za/store/product/tea-tree-flawless-bb-cream

2. Esteé Lauder Signature Lipstick – 09 Venetian Rose

A very corally-nude colour that goes with any outfit. This formula is so hydrating especially when you are spending the whole day in the sun. Summer means dry lips and after applying some lipbalm, it gives you such a hydration boost. You want to be hassle free when you are living from the beach to the bar and having a soft statement colour with you makes life so much easier. It doesn’t last very long, but as long as my lips are dry-free, I can deal.

The only down side, you cannot find this lipstick anywhere online at the moment.

3. Avon Advance Techniques 360 Nourishment (Moroccan Argan Oil Range)

IMG_6074.JPG

I found myself completely leaving my hair routine and adapting to the weather. I would wash my hair one morning and depending on the how the day goes, I would be swimming in the ocean that afternoon. This shampoo and conditioner allowed me to wash my hair and after the swim still feel soft. It protects and nourishes the hair, especially the ends, and I didn’t have the need to style it. It helped me embrace the messy ocean waves. The serum I would apply to my hair before and after I decided to style it just for an extra boost.

Avon is having their big 20 Birthday Sale! Shop for it here: http://www.avon.co.za/PRSuite/home_page.page

4. The Body Shop Vitamin E SPF 15 Moisture Lotion

IMG_6093.JPG

I have been looking for YEARS to find a good moisturizer. If I think my skin is oily, it would become dry. Once its dry, it would become oily. Buying a product for my skin was a nightmare. I came across the Vitamin E range at The Body Shop and it completely transformed my cleansing routine. I would apply it in the morning under my sunscreen and it would keep me feeling hydrated, it would calm the dry and oily parts of my skin and I could feel it helping with protection from the sun. It also has the most amazing ‘glow’ about it that doesn’t leave you feeling too oily. And you wouldn’t believe how good it smells!

Having a good skincare routine during each month, especially the harsh months (i.e. summer and winter) is very important. Make changes constantly until you find what works for you. And also don’t be scared to spend a little more on your skin – it is worth taking care of.

This is available at any The Bodyshop store: http://www.thebodyshop.co.za/store/product/vitamin-e-protective-spf15-moisture-lotion

6. WFace Make-up finishing spray

IMG_6094.JPG

My go-to product that I reached for the most. Depending on how many products on my face, I would some nights not put moisturizer on because my skin had been wearing sunscreen the whole day, I would spray it on and it would keep my face feeling fresh the whole night. Also, sitting in the sun, you tend to get a little hot and sticky. This spray made my make-up/fresh face last a little longer.

It’s only R89.95 at Woolworths: http://www.woolworths.co.za/store/prod/Beauty/Makeup/Face/Make-Up-Finishing-Spray-W-Face/_/A-501679904

7. Australian Gold SPF 50 Sunscreen Lotion

IMG_6135.JPG

Have you ever smelt Australian Gold sunscreen? Close your eyes…now think of what summer smells like…This stuff literally smells like summer! You need nothing more for your body on the beach. You smell good, you feel good and you are protected. The only thing is that when you are swimming and it gets in your eye, it can burn like a bitch.

We got it from a Rip Curl store: http://www.boardriders.co.za/gearandgadgets/australiangold/show/all

8. The Body Shop Coconut Shimmer Body Butter

IMG_6077.JPG

Together with the Australian Gold, I was a walking coconut. This body butter smells so fantastic that you can’t help but crave a Pina Colada once you put it on! The shimmer is rather intense though, so I mixed a little with my everyday Nivea body lotion just to get a slight shimmer, but still get the moisture that it is known for to help keep your skin soft. It also helped alot to keep my skin from peeling.

9. The go-to summer outfit

IMG_6096.JPG

A good trusty bikini, a dress to throw over, sandals to walk on the hot pavement and sunglasses for protection. This was my go-to summer outfit for everyday. You spend the whole day on the beach anyway so you take the dress and shoes off. No-one notices that you are wearing the same thing. Sometimes I would change the sunglasses or I would throw on a hat, but my dress was the only thing that I wore to the beach over my bikini. I spent less time doing laundry and more time seeing my friends. It’s easy and effortless and this dress always gets a good compliment.

10. The bag

You need that trusty handbag. Not too big and not too small. This is my Woolworths faux leather handbag that I received as a gift in 2014. You can see it’s been through hell already, but it is the only handbag that I use. It has 3 amazing compartments, and it is never hard to find anything in here!

I hope you have enjoyed this post and that it gave you a few pointers on must have’s that you can get this/next summer. These things were my go to products and I would not have survived the hot scorching South African Summer without any of them!

Dear 2015

The amount of times the words “how fast is time flying?” was spoken in 2015 is just insane. But really now, 2015 flew by as fast as time flies me sitting in front of the TV watching Netflix. 2015 came with so many good things and a few challenges – but it was a year which has helped me grow immensely. I have decided to start documenting my life here. I’m getting older and I try to think back to January 2015, never mind the years before that, it gets tougher with age (*face palm*). I want to start looking back and remember how I felt at that exact moment – life is currently moving at super speed.

This year started off with travelling back from the Electric Vines Festival in Robertson. A time spent with friends drinking good wine and listening to some good bands. Sometimes I feel like I belong there, amongst the vines. We truly produce the best wine in the world in this country.

Another big thing that happened in 2015, literally everyone got engaged. My timeline was filled with old friends and new friends showing off their beautiful lucky left fingers. The best one being, one of my closest friends, Ash. She got engaged in Paris by the Eiffel Tower. Jip, it doesn’t get any more romantic. I cannot wait to see her walk down the aisle.

My one goal for 2015 was to put myself out there, do something out of my comfort zone – I joined the NMMU Choir. I love singing. Like love it. And I always dreamt of being in a band or something. But I did it, and I am the happiest person because of it.  So this has driven me to keep challenging myself in 2016. It took 25 years. The Choir allowed me to do something for myself, meet new people and express myself.

I also took a lovely trip down to Cape Town. So many of my friends have made the move to the ‘Big City’ and it was time that I stop by to see how they were doing. Drinking wine was obviously on the cards and spending some more time with them made me realise again how fantastically lucky I am to have them in my life.

I actually had 2 highlights in the year. The first, I moved in with my long-time boyfriend! Moving in wasn’t easy, but all the challenges are good challenges. Finding balance between two people is such an interesting process and you learn so much about the other person. We are still finding our groove, but I couldn’t be happier.

The other highlight, I finally got the chance to travel internationally. I got to attend the first ever International Choral Expo in Macau.

China is mind-blowing. Mind-blowing in the sense that everything is big, shiny and weird. My mind could not fathom what was happening. It was great. From swollen ankles to being tired, I was running on overdrive to take in as much as I possibly could.

The year ended off with some sadness – my mother and sister moved away. My sister will be studying in a different city and being home bound for so long, it was tough to see them go. Our December holidays was filled with exciting activities with lots of family members and 2015 my other sister and I had to learn how to create a new Christmas tradition. What a glorious, drunk and food filled day it was. Almost my own, small family right here at home.

As for 2016, I am very excited to see what it holds. I’m corny and I have made so many New Year’s resolutions and the first three weeks are looking good! Here is to a year filled with love, laughter, new challenges, putting myself out there, some more travelling and more blogging. Here we go.
